RBT in Missouri at MyWorld ABA

How to Become an RBT in Missouri

If you are looking for work that matters, helping children learn, grow, and connect, a career as a Registered Behavior Technician may be the right fit. RBTs are the heart of daily therapy at My World ABA, working one on one with children and young adults ages 18 months to 21 at our clinics in Springfield and Joplin. You do not need to arrive with experience in applied behavior analysis. What matters most is patience, kindness, and a willingness to learn. Here is what the role looks like, how certification works in Missouri, and how to get started with our team.

What does an RBT do in a clinic-based ABA program?

An RBT works directly with children during therapy sessions, following an individualized plan written and supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. In a clinic-based program like ours, that work happens through play: practicing communication, social skills, learning skills, and everyday routines in the activities a child already enjoys. RBTs also record progress during each session so the clinical team can see what is working and adjust the plan. It is hands-on, active, rewarding work, and no two children are alike.

How do you become an RBT in Missouri?

RBT certification is set nationally by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, so the path in Missouri is the same as everywhere else in the country. In general, you must be at least 18 years old, have at least a high school education, and pass a criminal background check. From there, you complete a 40-hour training, finish an initial competency assessment with a qualified assessor, apply to the board, and pass the RBT exam. Once certified, you work under ongoing supervision from a behavior analyst, which is how the learning continues on the job.The board updated its requirements for 2026, so check the current details at bacb.com before you enroll in a training. And here is the encouraging part: you do not need to be certified before you apply with My World ABA. Our application includes a willing to train option, and our team can help new hires work toward the credential.

What is the difference between an RBT, a BCABA, and a BCBA?

Think of these roles as a career ladder. An RBT provides direct, one on one support during sessions. A Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) takes on more assessment and program responsibilities while working under a BCBA. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) leads the clinical side: conducting assessments, designing treatment plans, supervising the team, and partnering with families. Many people begin as an RBT and grow from there, and our team supports that path.

What qualities help someone succeed as an RBT?

The strongest RBTs are not defined by their resumes. They are patient and consistent, communicate clearly with teammates and supervisors, respect every child’s dignity, and stay curious about what helps each child learn. If you have worked with children in any setting, or you simply know this is the kind of work you want to do, those qualities carry further than any specific background.

What is it like to work in a play-based clinic?

Our motto is simple: let us into their world first. At My World ABA, therapy is play-based and child led, which means sessions are built around the games, toys, and activities each child already loves. As an RBT here, you might spend a morning building block towers that double as turn-taking practice, or a snack time that becomes a chance to practice communication. The clinic environment keeps every session supported: your supervising analyst is nearby, your teammates are in the next room, and the day has a rhythm children can count on.
