Sensory-Friendly Activities in Joplin, Missouri

For some children with autism or other sensory disorders, it can be difficult to find accommodating activities. Many activities and venues aimed at kids are loud, bright, and, frankly, overwhelming.

Luckily, more and more places are starting to find ways to be inclusive and have events that all children can enjoy, including our autistic and other special needs friends. My World ABA has compiled a list of sensory-friendly activities for families in Joplin, Missouri.

Soar Joplin Trampoline Park

Soar Joplin sets aside one day each month for a sensory-friendly jump event. The trampoline park offers in-ground trampolines, a foam pit, dodgeball, basketball, and more.

There is no music or whistles during the event to create a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere. Children can have one parent or aide jump with them and assist them, free of charge.  There are also opportunities to host special needs birthday parties during these times. Contact Soar Joplin for more information.

Chuck E Cheese

The arcade and pizza place offers Sensory Sensitive Sundays, where the first two hours of the day are catered to those with sensory needs. This event usually happens on the first Sunday of every month, and the arcade opens two hours early. During those two hours, the lights are dimmed, the sounds are turned down, and kids can enjoy the fun of the arcade in a more calm atmosphere.

Route 66 Movie Theater

The theater offers sensory-friendly screenings for families with kids who might be sensitive to a typical movie setting. During these screenings, the lights are turned up, the sound is turned down, and the atmosphere is much more relaxed. You can also bring your own special snacks if your child has a dietary need, like eating gluten-free foods.

Landreth Park

The park features an inclusive playground area with ramps and ground-level activities, as well as various outdoor courts and picnic areas.
